Novels for a New Age

The heart of Tim’s philosophy is our need to return to our essential being, a sense of self that we have lost. We have been disempowered and forced into lifestyles that distort who we naturally are. We need to return to control of our lives in every way – politically, economically, socially and spiritually; genuine democracy, self-empowerment and freedom,

We have been torn from our true nature as human beings by social convention, religions, cultural conformity, the media and our work environment, self-serving politicians, and in countless other ways.

We need to return to our natural spirituality, community and way of being as humans, based on a true and direct connection with the earth, a morality that arises from that connection, and a society that is truly democratic and free and that rests on the fundamental principles of being, belonging, caring, and sharing.

Return2Being Cycle

The Return2Being Cycle of books examines these themes in a variety of ways, from novels and poetry to travel and a book on spiritual philosophy:

Tim’s social, moral and spiritual philosophies are developed and discussed in two books. You Are All gives a practical outline of Tim’s philosophy. Journey to the Center of My Being is an account of a 3-month journey around the American West in a motorhome that was a deeply transformatory experience:

Courses/Workshops

Welcome –

to the writings and workshops of Tim Lewis

Tim is the author of 12 books – ranging from collections of photography, poetry and short stories to novels, histories and travel books. His stories take place in such exotic places as French Polynesia, South Africa, India, the American West, and the hills of Wales. He was born in Malawi, grew up in England and now lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has won numerous awards, grants and residencies.

As well as writing, Tim runs workshops for writers and tours the world performing readings from his books, all of which reflect Tim’s strong personal philosophy of life. This philosophy is based on caring for the planet and each other, beyond the bounds of race, religion, sexuality, or any other spurious division thrown up between people. His spirituality is one that moves beyond the limits of religion and god, to a freedom of thought an expression that embraces the universe as one.

This is the most challenging and interesting history of Virginia ever published. It is a book of original poetry written by the author from the point-of-view of everyday Virginians.

The Virginiad is completely original. Tim uses his poems to explore Virginia from 1607 to the present through the eyes of ordinary people going about their lives as they unravel themes such as the fight for religious liberty, the expansion of the frontier, the Civil War, and the struggle for democracy.

We see the issues that have dominated Virginia history through the eyes of slaves, Native Americans, tenant farmers, peddlers, nurses, and clerks. We follow the history of great houses and communities, of industries and crafts, and peek at our national heroes as others might have seen them.

The poetry mixes songs, hymns, cultural customs, religious awakenings, social beliefs, and political movements to present a far wider cultural context for the history of Virginia than usual.

The Virginiad is a passage through change, an exploration of who we are and how we’ve evolved over time. It captures the local, national, and international significance of Virginia’s history, ideas, and culture, as well as the impact its experiences have had on America and on shaping the world – for many of the issues raised in James Towne in 1607 are the same issues we are debating today.

The Passion of Writing

The Passion of Writing is an 8-week course in how to write with feeling,

emotion, and passion: how to grip a reader with the power of your voice.

This 8-week course covers fiction, short stories, and poetry, and is of relevance

to dramatists. It is mainly aimed at beginners and intermediate writers. Each session is two hours and consists of an introduction, discussion, and writing exercises. There is also homework.

This is not a course in “how to get published,” nor in “how to find an agent,” nor in sitting around reading your previous efforts, nor in the structures of writing (such as haikus vs sonnets; or thrillers vs romances). It is about the heart of writing; about discovering the passion of writing in all its forms.

Courses and Workshops

Tim has been running a variety of writing courses for beginners and more experienced writers for many years. He also works with individual authors on specific manuscripts and offers one-day workshops in poetry, novel writing, and other areas of both fiction and non-fiction writing styles.

Tim has written books of history, poetry, short stories, novels, travel and philosophy, so has a broad range of skills in writing. His novels cover such genres as political thrillers, romances, murder mysteries and mystical realism.

Tim’s courses and workshops take a unique approach. They start with theme and only then move on to plot, character and location. He addresses how to arc plot and character development, how to develop sub-themes and counter-themes, and how characters, action and locations revolve around these themes.
